About 1647, Stephen Harding, a blacksmith by trade, and who was about 23 years old, left his fathers house in Braintree and joined a Roger Williams party going to Swanzey, RI. where he was admitted to membership in the First Baptist Church of Swanzey. While at Swanzey he married Bridget Estance, daughter of Thomas Estance, one of the earliest settlers of Swanzey. A few years later Stephen became a resident of Providence, RI., where he came into possession of the town right of an original grantee, and in whose name he and his heirs drew many lots. Many of his decendant settled at this place.

Stephen Harding was first mentioned on the public records of Providence on March 28, 1664, when he had land laid out; On Oct. 27, 1665, he had a grant of 25 acres of the common land for 10s; August 7, 1669 he purchased of John and Mary Jones a "right of commoning" in Providence on the East side of the Nacunkeake. Nov. 16, 1674, he bought of Thomas Estance 1/4 of a "right of common" in all of the undivied lands of Providence; May 24, 1675, he purchased, of William Hopkins, 70 acres in Providence, "measured by an 18 foot pole", and deeded this plot to his son John, on Aug. 24, 1682. July 1, 1679, he and his son Stephen, were taxed together, 7s, 6d; before April 19, 1680, he gave to his son Stephen, a house, orchard, lands and meadow, near his brother Abraham's. On Jan. 15, 1695, he signed a deed for 8 acres of land to his son Abraham - previously sold and paid for - specifying that he had not time to sign it in the lifetime of his son, but yet now does so. April 10, 1693, he and his wife Bridget, deeded to son Abraham all homestead estate not heretofore given.

Stephen Harding died Feb. 20, 1697/8, and on April 12 of that year, administration of his estate was granted to his son, John, of Newport, who presented an inventory of the estate valued at 44lb, 16s, 6d.


1. John, b. abt 1652, inherited from his father, 70 acres in Providence, originally measured with an 18 foot pole; and Dec. 31, 1712 sold his brother Stephen, for 19 Pounds, in Silver, 50 acres in Providence, in several parcels, west of the Moshausuch River, one do. was between Windhan Hill and Robbin's Brook; witnesses, Thomas Whipple and James Dexter. He also sold Stephen, Feb. 7, 1744, for 72 pounds, all his lands West of seven mile line, with his house thereon. John married Sarah Butcher (b. 1652, d. 7 May, 1716).

2. Stephen, b. 1654 was a blacksmith at Providence and was married Jan. 28, 1672 to Mercy Winsor, a daughter of Joshua Winsor, and made his will April 16, 1680, leaving all his property to his father except "so much as shall satisfy my sisters for the tending of me". Mercy Winsor Harding died early in 1680, and Stephen died May 31 of the same year; there were no children born to this marrage.

Benjamin, son of Philip and Sarah Sherman, was born in Portsmouth, R.I., in 1650. He married Hannah Mowry, 3 Dec., 1674. Benjamin was a farmer in the town of Portsmouth, and a land holder in Kingston. His will was recorded in Portsmouth 8 Dec., 1718, where he died. (Source 1049 24:68)

1158. Robert Howard

Robert Howard , came from Dorchester via London in the "Assurance", July, 1635, when he was 22 years old and a miller by trade. He had a lot in Windsor which he sold to Peter Brown, 1658, and then moved to Northampton. He later returned to Windsor. He married Lydia Kilbourne and who died 4 May, 1676. He died 23 Aug., 1684.

John Doane was born in England and came to Plymouth Mass as the founder of the Doane Family in America. Nothing is known of his life in England and after living for a time in Plymouth he moved to Eastham, Mass. with his family in 1645. He was a Deacon of the First Church of Eastham for many years. Upon his death, he left his wife and daughters his house, 3 napkins, five towels, two pewter platters, one porringer with two saucers, one beer bowl, and one wine cup. (NEHG 138-14)

1172. John Freeman

[Major] John Freeman, born in England 28 Jan., 1626/7, came to New England with his parents at the age of 8 years. 14 Feb., 1649 he married Mercy Prence, the daughter of Gov. Thomas Prence, and settled in the Orleans section of Eastham, Mass. He was made freeman 5 June, 1651 and was a deputy to Colony Court in 1653 and many years after. In 1657 he was an assistant to the Governor and reelected yearly till the union of the Colonies in 1692. Many years a deacon of the church. Was a Captain of the militia and in 1685 appointed Major.He died 28 Oct., 1719 at Easton, Mass.
